Short answer: A Telegram channel can post stories only after it reaches boost level 1. Check the missing boosts under Channel Info → Statistics → Boosts, collect or order that number, then any admin with the Post Stories permission can publish. Each extra level adds one more story per day.
Many channel owners look for the story button, cannot find it and assume their app is out of date. In almost every case the app is fine; the channel simply has not reached the level that unlocks stories. Unlike personal accounts, channels do not get stories by default. Telegram ties the feature to boosts, the votes of support that Premium users can give to channels and groups.
This guide walks through the whole process: why the level rule exists, how to calculate the boosts you need, how to collect or order them, how to publish the first story and how to keep the feature from switching off later. If you already know the number and only want to order, the Telegram boost for stories page covers packages and durations.
Why Telegram channels need boosts to post stories
Telegram uses levels to hand out channel features gradually. A channel collects boosts, the boosts push it over a threshold and each threshold unlocks something new. Stories are the very first item on that list: at level 1 the channel can publish one story per day, at level 2 two stories, and so on. Higher levels add custom reactions, colours, cover logos and wallpapers on top.
The rule exists to stop spam channels from flooding the stories bar. Because only Premium users can boost, a channel that reaches level 1 has shown at least some support from paying accounts. For a large channel that is easy; for a new or niche channel it can be the hardest step, because few subscribers have Premium and fewer still think to boost.
- Level 0: no stories; the channel posts only regular messages
- Level 1: stories unlock with one story per day
- Each additional level: one more story per day
- Below level 1 again: new stories cannot be posted until the level returns
How many boosts do you need to activate stories?
There is no single number, because Telegram scales the threshold with the size of the channel. Our channel level table explains the full formula; for stories you only need its first step.
- Divide your subscriber count by 250 and drop the decimals.
- Add 1. This is the channel coefficient.
- Divide the coefficient by 2 and round up. That is the boost count for level 1.
A channel with 1,000 subscribers has a coefficient of 5 and needs 3 boosts. With 5,000 subscribers the coefficient is 21 and level 1 takes 11 boosts. At 10,000 subscribers you need 21, and at 50,000 subscribers 101. If you want several stories a day, multiply the coefficient by the level and halve it for levels up to 8, or use the Telegram boost calculator.
Always confirm the figure in the app before acting. Open the channel, tap its name, go to Statistics and then Boosts. The screen shows the current level, the boosts you already hold and how many are missing for the next level. That live number beats any formula, because it already includes boosts that are about to expire.
How to collect the boosts
There are three realistic routes, and most channels combine them.
- Ask your Premium subscribers. Share the boost link from the Boosts screen in a pinned post and explain what the channel will do with stories. Each Premium subscription includes four boost slots, so even a handful of supporters can cover level 1 on a small channel.
- Run a Premium giveaway. Channels can gift Premium subscriptions to subscribers; winners’ boosts go to the channel for the period of the gift. It works, but the cost per boost is high for a channel that only needs the first level.
- Order a boost package. On the TelegramBoost panel you pick a duration from 1 to 365 days, enter the channel link and the quantity, and the boosts count for the whole period. No admin access or password is involved.
Whatever route you choose, add a small margin above the exact threshold. Boosts from real users can expire when their Premium ends, and a channel that sits exactly on the line will drop back to level 0 the first time that happens.
How to post your first story on the channel
Once the boost screen shows level 1, the story option appears for admins who have permission to post stories. Telegram moves buttons between versions, but the flow is the same on Android, iOS and desktop.
- Update Telegram to the latest version so the channel story controls are available.
- Open the channel profile. On most versions you will see a story or camera option there; on others it sits in the three-dot menu.
- Alternatively, open the story camera from the chat list and use the selector at the top to switch from your own account to the channel.
- Record or choose a photo or video, add text, stickers or a link, and publish.
- Check the channel avatar: a coloured ring now shows subscribers that a new story is waiting.
If another admin should post stories, edit their admin rights and enable Post Stories. The same screen has separate permissions for editing and deleting other admins’ stories, which is useful for teams where one person drafts and another approves.
Daily limits and how to plan story slots
The daily story allowance equals the channel level, so a level 1 channel has one slot, level 3 has three and level 10 has ten. Plan the slots the way you plan posts. A news channel might use one story for the morning headline, a shop channel one for the daily offer, and a creator channel one for behind-the-scenes content.
Do not chase a high level only for the number of stories. Most channels get the best result from one or two strong stories a day linked to a regular post. If you later want more slots, calculate the next level and add boosts in one step rather than ordering several small top-ups.
Keeping stories switched on
Stories stay available only while the channel holds level 1 or higher. Two things can take that away: boosts expiring and the channel growing. Boosts from real users disappear when their Premium ends, and boost packages stop counting when their period finishes. At the same time, a growing channel raises its own threshold, because the coefficient follows the subscriber count.
- Write the end date of every boost package in your content calendar.
- Recheck the Boosts screen after a big jump in subscribers.
- Keep a margin of a few boosts above the threshold.
- Renew with the same channel link before the period ends, not after the level has dropped.
Getting more people to watch your stories
Unlocking the feature is only half the job. Stories appear in the bar at the top of the chat list, so a channel with an engaged audience gets natural reach; a channel with many muted subscribers sees fewer views. Mention new stories in regular posts, use stories for content that expires naturally, such as daily deals or event reminders, and add a link sticker that leads back to the main post.
Some owners also support important stories with story views or likes from the panel. Use them as a modest push for content that is already worth watching, not as a replacement for it. The Telegram views page lists post and story view options.
Common problems and fixes
- No story option at all: the channel is below level 1 or the app is outdated. Check the Boosts screen first.
- The option is visible to the owner but not to another admin: that admin lacks the Post Stories permission.
- Stories stopped working after a promotion: subscriber growth raised the threshold. Recalculate and top up.
- Boosts were ordered but the level did not change: confirm the order used the channel link, not a link to a single message, and that a private channel was ordered with its invite link and a private-channel service.
- Group instead of channel: groups follow their own, usually higher, thresholds. See how to boost a Telegram group.
Frequently asked questions
What level does a Telegram channel need to post stories?
Level 1. Once the channel reaches boost level 1, admins with the story permission can publish one story per day, and every further level adds one more daily story.
How many boosts does level 1 take?
It depends on subscribers. The channel coefficient is subscribers divided by 250, rounded down, plus 1; level 1 needs half of that, rounded up. A 1,000-subscriber channel needs 3 boosts, a 10,000-subscriber channel 21.
Does the admin need Telegram Premium to post channel stories?
No. The channel needs the level, not the admin. Any admin who has the Post Stories permission can publish once the channel has reached level 1.
Why did the story button disappear from my channel?
Usually because boosts expired or the channel grew past its old threshold, so it fell below level 1. Check the boost screen, then add the missing boosts to restore story posting.
Can a Telegram group post stories too?
Yes. Groups that reach level 1 can post stories in the same way, but groups usually need more boosts than channels of a similar size, so read the number on the group’s own boost screen.
